Virgil Abloh slowly rose to his fame as a predominant fashion designer and creative architect for Off-White back in 2012. The creative genius has been praised with awards for his groundbreaking take on menswear, bridging the gap between streetwear and high end. In 2018 the Chicago native debuted his historic first collection for Louis Vuitton after taking the seat as LV’s Menswear Artistic Director. The fashion show back in June was cluttered with A-list celebrities like Kanye, Pharrell Williams, and Chadwick Boseman.
With the awards season underway, we’ve had a chance to see some of Abloh’s designs on the red carpet in full display. Timothee Chalamet made headlines as one of the best dressed at the Golden Globes. He was styled in a Louis Vuitton custom leather embellished harness vest that was accompanied with a sleek all black attire. Virgil Abloh is known for staying true to traditional silhouettes, keeping the classic Hollywood glamour unaltered, but adds innovative detailing for trend worthy suggestions to the menswear community. A leather harness is rather simplistic in it’s design but makes a large statement, especially when placed over a suit. The rugged texture of leather balanced with the intricate cut of the piece makes for great appeal and acceptance within the fashion scene.
To solidify the harness statement as a slow burning trend, Michael B. Jordan sported a custom floral printed harness designed by Abloh at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. A fitted navy suit was styled underneath, quickly becoming one of the fashion favorites of the night. The actor loved his harness so much he even made an effort to put it back on after taking off his sports coat during the awards show. While we don’t know if leather harnesses will become just as relevant as leather belts, but we do love the concept and hope to see more.
Virgil Abloh will most likely bring more trends to the scene this year, as his vision for design and construction is beyond most. His LV iridescent Keepall Bag seen being carried around by celebrities like Offset has just been restocked after selling out almost instantly.
