A far cry from previous Grammy Award carpets, the elites within the music scene opted for more glamorous, retained styles for 2019. Usually artists go above and beyond to create outlandish, costume-like looks to draw as much attention as possible, as they are not afraid to make the red carpet their stage for the evening. Sunday night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles the prominent performers of the year showcased haute couture gowns much like what would be seen at the Golden Globes. Yet don’t get it wrong, there were still elements of elevation, literally, as some of the outfits included dramatic constructions and angular designs.
Cardi B., a fan favorite when it comes to her fashion choices, arrived with Offset styled in a Jean Paul Gaultier 1995 archival dress. Though she was more covered than one would have expected, the piece was rather impressive as she shuffled her way down the carpet due to the confined silhouette.
Janelle Monae also wore a Jean Paul Gaultier with dramatic construction. Her sharp, heightened shoulders gave a wow-factor to the overall tamed design. Even though she did not leave with an award, she gave a memorable medley performance featuring songs from her album Dirty Computers.
One of the most undeniable trends from the night was the abundance of sequin and glitter. Camila Cabello was one of the first stars to arrive, styled in a gorgeous Armani Prive glittered gown. While it was a modest fashion move, with a high neck and fully sleeved, it eloquently showed off her slim figure.
Jennifer Lopez second the embellishment notion as she arrived in a crisp white Ralph & Russo gown with an exaggerated brimmed hat. Her look was overall very polished and bold, much like her individual persona.
When it comes to the menswear, the celebrated male performers wore sleek, tailored suits. Charlie Puth had one of the most buzzed looks for his 70s inspired Prada attire.
Shawn Mendes was styled in a cobalt blue Paul Smith suit that fit like a glove. Black, blue, and other cooler tones were relevant throughout the red carpet. While he did not win either of his two nominations, he put on an epic performance alongside Miley Cyrus.
The 2019 Grammys was packed full of spectacular performances from the influential artists of the year and a sense of inclusiveness within music. Alicia Keys, while noted as an exceptional performer, proved to be a class act host as well. Throughout the evening she inspired the guests and viewers to see the power of music in everyday life. While music can inspire personal identity, it can also promote great style. Here are some other notable looks the Grammys served up.
